Devana

Somehow Devana and Snow had made it back to the castle without anyone the wiser. Lucinda had been right about the discrepancy in time. What had felt like hours in the faerie lands had been only minutes in the human realm.

Devana still didn’t know how Moonshadow and Damien had made it safely back to the royal stables, but considering the affect Snow White had on animals, there was always the possibility they’d found their way back on their own.

Somehow no one knew what had happened, no reports of their excursion to Lawson had been reported. And for once the princess had listened to Devana.

Until they knew how the demons were tracking Snow, they were going to stay on the castle grounds, among the people. The royal forest was no longer on the list of approved locations per Devana, so instead of riding there every day, Snow walked through the gardens and then rode Moonshadow through the grounds at a leisurely walk.

More and more animals were starting to come out of the forest. Devana saw multiple owls at night and on every perch. Smaller creatures grew bold, and the ones that would be shot on sight only came out at night.

Devana wondered if anyone else noticed it other than her.

The last fortnight with Snow had been the best days of Devana’s life.

Thanks to the mourning period, the princess’s lessons were cancelled, and the queen only asked for her to attend dinner while she dealt with all the demands of the kingdom.

Surreptitious kisses in the garden made Devana feel alive for the first time since she could remember. Every look Snow gave her made her heart pound. Every touch was their little secret and it was all that kept Devana going some days.

Because whether the princess wanted to admit it or not, the queen would demand she marry and produce heirs. Devana was no fool. All this would one day end, and she planned to enjoy every stolen moment until she was forced to give up the woman who’d shaken her awake with a passion that rivaled the gods.

This peace and quiet and joy would not last.

Devana watched with a sharp eye as the princess practiced with the bow again, wondering if she knew it as well.

Snow White had come out to the archery range every day for the last fortnight. It was impressive, considering the princess had never done any physical activity outside of riding or dancing.

Snow picked up the bow quicker than Devana had expected her to, but the princess was nothing if not determined.

Her hunting knife bit into the apple and Devana ate the slice off the blade as she watched.

Glass, apples, and diamonds were the jewels of Baylore. It was strange to Devana, she’d always valued food more, but Baylore imported nearly all of their produce, except its rich variety of apples.

Snow finished the arrows in the quiver, working on both her right and left side using the various techniques Devana had shown her. The princess didn’t need her help or pointers anymore, only practice.
